What to Bring in SAT Test: The Essentials You Cannot Skip

Table Of Contents

Knowing what to bring in SAT test day is just as important as knowing the content. Showing up without the right materials can mean being turned away from the testing center entirely, which is a situation no amount of preparation can recover from.

The good news is that the list of required items is short. The digital SAT has simplified what students need to bring compared to the old paper format. But each item on that required list is non-negotiable. Miss one and you will not be sitting down to take that test.

Here is everything you need to have with you when you walk through that door.

The Required Items List: What to Bring in SAT Test Day

Your Fully Charged Testing Device with Bluebook Installed

The digital SAT is taken entirely on your personal device. Your laptop, tablet, or other approved device must be fully charged before you leave home. Do not count on finding a charging outlet at the testing center.

More importantly, the Bluebook application must already be installed on your device and your exam setup must be completed before test day. The College Board provides detailed device requirements on their Bluebook website, and you should check those well in advance to confirm your device meets all specifications. Discovering a compatibility issue the night before your test is not a situation you want to be in.

Your Admission Ticket from the Bluebook App

Your admission ticket is generated through the Bluebook app after you complete exam setup, which becomes available starting five days before your test date. While you can access your ticket digitally through the app, bringing a printed copy is the preferred approach.

A printed ticket removes any risk of app issues, login problems, or device malfunctions affecting your ability to check in at the testing center. Print it the day before your test and put it somewhere you will not forget it.

Acceptable Photo ID

Every student taking the SAT must present a valid photo ID at the testing center. This must be a physical document. Electronic ID on your phone or device is not acceptable.

Check the College Board’s current list of acceptable photo identification before test day to confirm your document qualifies. A school-issued ID typically works for most students, but the specific requirements are worth verifying directly so there is no confusion when you arrive.

Pencils or Pens for Scratch Work

Even though the SAT is taken digitally, you will still want to do scratch work by hand as you work through problems. Bring pencils or pens so you have something to write with during the test. This is especially important for SAT Math, where working through multi-step problems on paper before entering your answer on screen can prevent careless errors.

Your College Board Username and Password

You will need your College Board login credentials to access Bluebook on test day. Write these down somewhere secure and bring that with you, or make sure you have them memorized before you leave home. Getting locked out of your account at the testing center is a stressful and avoidable problem.

An Acceptable Calculator

The SAT Math section allows you to use a calculator, and the Bluebook application includes a built-in calculator that you can toggle between scientific and graphing modes. However, you are also permitted to bring your own approved external calculator if you prefer working with a physical device.

If you plan to bring your own calculator, verify that it appears on the College Board’s approved calculator list before test day. Using a calculator you are familiar with from your practice sessions can be a meaningful advantage, particularly on the more complex math problems where calculator fluency matters.

Epinephrine Auto-Injectors

Students who carry epinephrine auto-injectors such as EpiPens are permitted to bring them into the testing room without any special accommodations approval. They must be placed in a clear bag and stored under your desk during testing. For any other medications or medical devices, contact the College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities in advance to understand the relevant policies.

Wired Headphones If You Have a Text-to-Speech Accommodation

This is a newer requirement that students with approved Text-to-Speech accommodations need to be aware of. If you have been approved for the Text-to-Speech Embedded accommodation, you must bring your own wired headphones. Bluetooth headphones are not permitted. Make sure your headphones are wired and that you have tested them with your device before test day.

Nice to Have: Items Worth Packing in Your Bag

Beyond the required items, there are several things that are not mandatory but can meaningfully improve your test day experience. None of these will get you turned away if you forget them, but having them can make a long testing day significantly more comfortable.

A Watch Without an Audible Alarm

The Bluebook application includes a built-in timer that shows exactly how much time you have remaining in each module. For most students, that is sufficient for time management during the test itself.

Where a personal watch becomes useful is during the break. Knowing exactly how much break time you have left without needing to find a clock in the testing room helps you manage your rest time effectively. If you bring a watch, make sure it does not have an audible alarm, as those are not permitted in the testing environment.

A Charging Cable or Portable Charger

Your device needs to arrive fully charged, but having a charging cable or portable charger in your bag provides a backup option if something goes wrong. Some testing centers may have outlets available, and having your cable means you can take advantage of that if needed. A portable charger is an even more reliable option since it does not depend on outlet availability.

A Bag or Backpack

You will need somewhere to store your belongings during the test since personal items typically cannot be on your desk. A bag or backpack gives you a designated place to keep everything organized and within reach during breaks.

Food and Drinks for Your Break

The SAT includes a scheduled break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. This is your opportunity to eat something, hydrate, and reset mentally before tackling the Math modules.

Bringing a snack and a drink that you can access during the break is a simple way to maintain your energy and focus through the second half of the test. Choose something light that you know sits well with you rather than experimenting with something new on test day.

A Backup Testing Device

This is the highest impact optional item on the list. If something goes wrong with your primary device, having a backup means you can continue testing rather than facing a potentially unresolvable situation at the testing center. Not every student will have access to a second device, but if you do, bringing it is worth the extra weight in your bag.

What to Leave at Home on SAT Test Day

Knowing what to bring in SAT test is only half the picture. Certain items are not permitted in the testing room and bringing them can create unnecessary complications when you check in.

Devices with audible alarms are not permitted. Cameras and recording equipment of any kind are not allowed. Notes, books, and other reference materials must stay home. External keyboards and accessories beyond your approved device and calculator are generally not permitted. Check the College Board’s full prohibited items list to confirm anything you are unsure about.
